Simple Home Safety Tips

What measures will you go to to protect your valuables and loved ones? While many would go to far lengths, most of the simplest ways to keep these things safe, are often overlooked. Below, we have provided easy tips and tricks to keep your home and family safe. They may seem obvious, but most of these safety hacks are not utilized on a daily basis.

LOCK ALL DOORS

Yes, this may be the most obvious tip of all, but it is also the most efficient. Locking the front door should already be a habit, but do you check to confirm all the windows and back/garage doors are locked as well? Far too often do burglars enter from the back door or a garage door, simply because they were unlocked. In an interview conducted by ABC, where convicted burglars were asked a series of questions, almost all of the burglars said they would enter from an unlocked door or window. To prevent this, create a habit of checking ALL doors and windows before leaving the house.

CURB APPEAL

While we all want our homes to be nicely displayed, having an expensive looking exterior suggests that there are items worth stealing inside. This is not to say that your house should look ugly or unappealing, but it is a good idea to place all outside decor and furniture in the back yard. Burglars will often move on to a different house if your house does not look like it has anything valuable inside.

LEAVE THE TV ON

Leaving something on that makes it seem as if you are home, is a major deterrent for burglars. This can be a radio, TV, or music, etc. Leaving lights or fans on can also signify that you are home. Burglars are looking for the easiest, simplest and quickest house to break into. They are typically not looking to assault or harm anyone. Breaking into a house with people will immensely increase their chances of being caught and arrested.

BEWARE OF DOG SIGNS

Preventing a burglary can be as simple as hanging a “Beware of Dog” sign. Many burglars will immediately dismiss a house if it looks dangerous or complicated to break into. If you do not have an actual dog, make sure to have a sign that says you do. Burglars will do anything to avoid drawing attention to themselves, and a barking dog does just that. “Beware of Dog” signs can be purchased at many stores, like pet stores or hardware stores and can also be bought online. Remember to hang the sign somewhere easily visible to someone who is outside.
