Professionalism 101 in the Security Industry

Much has been written about “professionalism” in our industry, but what does professional really mean? There are many components to this term and at Guardian Protection Force Inc., the foundations can be found in our organization’s Core Values which include:

Integrity

Character

Honestly

Attitude

Appearance

Attendance

Customer Service

Accountability

The first three, integrity, character, and honesty can’t be taught and must be acquired. This can be during childhood by observing and mentoring from trusted individuals and role models. An organization must be skilled in selecting and hiring individuals who are carefully interviewed and backgrounded to be certain the selected individuals possess the moral attributes

The professional always adopts a positive can-do posture, remaining calm in the face of hostility or adversity and displaying a high emotional intelligence. He or she will use active listening skills while considering the needs and ideas of others.

The appearance of the professional officer is of paramount importance in establishing a command presence and will display an air of confidence. He or she will always show respect when talking with clients, customers, or suspects. The uniform will always be clean and pressed, shoes and boots shined, posture erect, and language clear, respectful, and cordial.

A professional is always on time. Members of the military have a saying; “if you are on time, you are late”. It is important to arrive early before the scheduled start of your shift in order to receive any pass down information from the officer that is being relieved. It is never permissible to leave your post until properly relieved.

Lastly, professionals always get the job done and keep their promises. A professional will deliver exceptional customer service and strive to accomplish more than is promised, with no excuses, doing their best to make everything right.

A professional is always accountable for their actions, words and behavior. They must show respect to all they encounter, customers, clients and others.

Security officers will often work alone at a post and therefore ARE the company as they are the only one the customers and other see and meet.
